Un an avant la bataille de Yavin (1 BBY), le virus Blackwing (un agent viral infectieux créé grâce aux pouvoirs de l'alchimie Sith) a été accidentellement libéré à bord du Destroyer Stellaire Impérial VECTOR, et plus tard dans la barge prison impériale PURGE, transformant tout le personnel en morts-vivants violents (voir le roman "Death Troopers" de Joe Schreiber). Après cet incident, le projet n'a pas été annulé et Dark Vador a envoyé un commando de Death Troopers pour récupérer le virus à bord du Destroyer Stellaire VECTOR et le relocaliser dans un centre de recherche et de détention impérial secret sur la lointaine planète Dathomir.
