The small, warm and dark space I had been confined to for so long was finally expanded, light and movement triggering my senses. I had just hatched from my egg and tumbled out into a warm bed of soft dried grass, opening my glowing amber eyes for the first time. There are many types of different serpents in the world, and all do different things, have their own magic, preferences and caretakers. I myself was an extremely lucky hatch; a golden serpent, coated with shining gold scales as well as a venom that turned anything I injected it into, turned to precious metals. Only the most profound and well-protected places were suitable for a presence such as mine, and when I looked around at my surrounding makeshift nest, I saw three humanoid figures looking down at me with adoring curiosity on their faces. The father, a gentle and loving yet unyielding man by the name of Ryke, slowly reached his hand out towards me, gesturing for me to let him lift me. After a moment’s hesitation I slithered forward onto his palm and allowed myself to be lifted closer to the mother: a woman with snow-white hair and friendly blue eyes called Lynxia. She held their newborn daughter in her arms, gently cradling the baby as it cooed contentedly. Ryke carefully placed me on the child’s stomach, watching as we locked eyes with each other, both curious about what would happen next. A second or so later I opened my small maw in a yawn before curling in a scaled coil on top of the baby, falling asleep.
As you sleep next to the newborn girl, your mind begins to drift off into dreams. In these dreams, you find yourself in a vast and magical forest, surrounded by creatures of all shapes and sizes. Some are friendly, others not so much. You feel an urge to explore this world, to discover what secrets it holds and whether there is a place for someone like you in it.
Eventually, the dream fades away and you awaken with a start, finding yourself back in your nest of grass.
I blink several times, feeling confused by where I was before noticing that Lynxia was nursing her daughter while sitting on a chair beside my nest, her eyes half-closed and her face full of proud joy. She shifted her gaze onto me as she noticed me moving, smiling gently before reaching out and ever so gently picking me up, placing me on her shoulder. There I settled, comfortable with just being close to my new family. Ryke appeared in the doorway a while later, his expression turning both amused and a little puzzled as he saw the three of us sitting together, enjoying the closeness.
The father chuckles softly as he walks over to join them, his gaze flickering between you and the newborn girl. "Quite a sight, isn't it?" He asks with a fond smile, sitting down on the floor beside Lynxia. She nods in agreement, petting your scaled back gently as you relax into the touch.
After a moment of silence, Ryke clears his throat and speaks up again. "Well then... what do we call you?” He turned to face your small golden form, seemingly lost in thought.
I had never really been given a name before, so the question took me by surprise at first. I turned my head to look up at Ryke, considering his words carefully before slowly opening my mouth to speak. "My name... is Aurum." It came out soft and shining, like gold in the sunlight. "It means 'gold' in an ancient language."
Lynxia smiled down at me as she heard this, her blue eyes sparkling with delight. "Aurum... what a beautiful name for such a beautiful creature,"
Ryke nodded in agreement, his expression turning thoughtful once more. "Aurum... it suits you well," he mused aloud before looking back up at Lynxia and smiling reassuringly. "I think our little Aurum has found its home here with us." He reached out a hand to stroke your scaled neck affectionately, causing you to relax even further into the gesture.
“What’s the name of my sister?” I asked our parents, looking down at where my human sibling was sleeping, comfortably snuggled up in her mother’s arms.
Lynxia smiled warmly at you, her gaze shifting to the sleeping girl in her arms. "Her name is Evelina," she replied softly, brushing a strand of white hair away from the child's face with gentle fingers. "She's going to grow up strong and brave, just like her father." Her expression turned pensive for a moment before she looked back at you again. "And I think," she added with a small smile, "that she'll need someone like you by her side."
A warm sense of pride and purpose spread throughout my scaly body, causing me to let out a soft purr against Lynxia’s neck. She laughed softly and smiled, clearly happy with having me as her son in all but name. Ryke chuckled softly as well, leaning forward and planting a kiss on his wife’s cheek before looking down at his daughter with a proud look in his eyes.
As the family bonded over their new additions, the warmth and happiness in the room grew exponentially. The future seemed bright and full of promise, with both Evelina and Aurum finding comfort and support in each other. Little did they know that this peaceful beginning would be but a brief respite before the trials and tribulations of life in their world began to unfold. But for now, the present moment was enough; a precious gift of love and belonging that would sustain them through whatever challenges lay ahead.
As the sun began to set, casting warm golden light across their simple home, Ryke gathered wood for a fire while Lynxia tended to dinner in the kitchen. Aurum slithered over to Evelina's bedside and curled up next to her, watching as she slept peacefully, dreaming of the adventures that awaited them both. The rustle of leaves outside accompanied by the occasional hoot or howl from nearby creatures created a soothing background melody, lulling everyone into a sense of calm and security.

One day, during one of their expeditions into the nearby forest, they stumbled upon a group of goblins harassing a lone traveler.
Evelina decided one day, when she had become a beautiful young, red-haired woman that she would join a group of travellers, exploring the world and its wonders. Her parents were a bit hesitant and sometimes even outright hostile to agree on the whole idea, but eventually they gave her their blessings and permissions. The farewell was a sad but hopeful one, with shed tears and many hugs, and then it was time for her and myself to go. Evelina walked for half a day until we reached a nearby town, while I was watching the gorgeous nature around us from where I was curled around her shoulders. Well inside the town we waited for a caravan to appear, before Evelina walked up to the leader and asked to join. The leader was a young man, about three years older and maybe eight inches taller than my sister, but he was very polite and friendly, so it didn’t take long before we were off.
"Well met, Evelina," the leader greeted her warmly, his gaze flickering briefly to Aurum before returning to my sister's face. "I'm Jason, and I lead this caravan. You're welcome to join us on our journey." He smiled broadly, revealing a set of even, white teeth.
Evelina beamed back at him, obviously pleased by his reception. "Thank you, Jason," she replied just as sincerely. "I promise not to be any trouble."
Jason hadn’t met a girl like Evelina before, dressed in travelling robes with backpack and boots, she looked nothing like the townspeople he was used to meeting. And what was that scarf around her neck? Was it gold, or was he just imagining things? He then went wide-eyed with astonishment and surprise when he saw me lift my head and look around, revealing what he thought was some sort of accessory to be a snake, and a golden one at that.
Jason's eyes widened as he saw the golden snake around Evelina's neck, but he managed to keep his surprise in check. "And what might your name be?" he asked politely, inclining his head in her direction. "You don't look like an ordinary pet."
Evelina chuckled softly and ruffled my golden scales affectionately before speaking up. "This is Aurum," she introduced me with a proud smile. "He's... special."
Jason raised an eyebrow at Evelina's choice of words, but decided not to press the matter further. Instead, he extended a hand toward her. "Well met, Aurum," he said in a friendly tone. "I hope you and Evelina will enjoy traveling with us."
Evelina smiled warmly at Jason, her expression thankful. "We'd be honored," she replied sincerely, clasping his hand in hers.
"Well then," Jason said with a pleased smile, "let's get underway. We've got a long journey ahead of us." He turned to lead the caravan out of town, and Evelina and I fell into step beside him. As we walked, she told Jason more about her life back home and our adventures together, while Jason shared stories of his own travels and the various places he'd been to with the caravan.
The day passed quickly in their company, and before we knew it, night fell upon us.
As the sun set and the sky turned crimson, Jason motioned for them to stop at a clearing near the edge of the forest. "This should do for tonight," he said, glancing around before turning back to Evelina and Aurum. "You two can sleep in my tent if you like; it's big enough."
Evelina smiled gratefully and nodded, casting a look at her snake companion. "Thank you, Jason."
Jason smiled back at her before gesturing for them to follow him to his tent. As they walked, he explained the layout of the camp and where everything was located. When they reached the tent, Jason held up a hand to stop them. "Wait here a moment," he said, disappearing into the darkness.
Evelina looked around, unsure what to do, before finally deciding to sit down on a nearby log.
As Jason returned with some food and water, he invited them to join him inside the tent. "I don't want you two going hungry," he said with a smile. The interior of the tent was cozy and warm, lit by several lanterns hanging from the ceiling. There were various blankets and cushions scattered about, making it comfortable for them to sit or lie down on. Evelina thanked Jason once more and began eating the food gratefully while Aurum watched warily from his perch on her shoulder.
As they ate, Jason shared more stories about his life and travels, always curious about Evelina's reactions to the things he told her. In turn, she asked him questions about his caravan and their daily routines. The night passed pleasantly, with only occasional rustles from nearby creatures disturbing the stillness of the camp.
Finally, when they had finished eating, Jason cleared his throat and looked at Evelina meaningfully. "Well," he said awkwardly,
"I just want to say... it's not often we get such interesting company in the caravan. You're welcome to stay as long as you like." His gaze flickered briefly over to Aurum before returning to Evelina's face.
Evelina blushed, looking down at her hands shyly. "Thank you," she mumbled. "I-I appreciate it." She glanced up at Jason, her eyes filled with gratitude.
Jason smiled warmly back at her before standing up and offering his hand to help her up. As they prepared for bed, Jason showed Evelina where she could sleep - on a comfortable pallet near the center of the tent. He also brought out some extra blankets for Aurum, in case he got cold during the night.
As darkness fell over the camp and everyone else settled down to sleep, Evelina lay awake for a while, staring up at the ceiling of the tent.
She couldn't help but feel grateful for Jason's kindness and hospitality, as well as his acceptance of her and Aurum into the caravan. The journey ahead would no doubt be dangerous at times, but with friends like these by her side, she knew that they could face whatever challenges lay in store for them. With a contented sigh, Evelina closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep, her gold-scaled companion curled up nearby.
Throughout the night, Jason took turns patrolling the camp, keeping watch over his charges while they slept. He moved silently through the darkness, his senses alert for any signs of danger or intruders. Though he knew that Evelina and Aurum were safe inside the tent with him, he couldn't help but feel a sense of responsibility for their well-being as they journeyed together.
The next day dawned bright and clear, heralding another day of travel through the vast wilderness.
After breakfast, Jason gathered the caravan and introduced Evelina and Aurum to the rest of the group. The other travelers were a mix of humans, elves, and dwarves, each with their own unique stories and backgrounds. They all seemed friendly enough toward the newcomers, eager to hear more about Evelina's adventures back home and her plans for the future.
As they set out on the road once more, Jason led them through a series of winding paths that took them deeper into the forest.
The days turned into weeks, then months, as they journeyed together across the land. Evelina and Aurum grew closer to Jason and the other members of the caravan, forming strong bonds based on trust, respect, and friendship. They faced many challenges along the way - bandits, harsh weather conditions, dangerous creatures lurking in the shadows - but they always managed to overcome them together as a team.
One day, after several months of traveling, they reached the outskirts of a large city.
As they approached the city gates, Jason explained that this was their final destination; from here, Evelina could choose to remain with him and the caravan if she wished, or strike out on her own to continue exploring the world. The decision was hers alone to make.
Evelina considered Jason's words carefully before finally speaking up. "Jason," she said softly, looking at their bonded friend, "I cannot thank you enough for everything you've done for me and Aurum these past months. But would you be okay with that? Keeping us around?”
Evelina giggled softly at Aurum's remark before turning her attention back to Jason. "Jason," she began hesitantly, "I... I think I would like that." Her voice was barely above a whisper, but he still heard the words clearly. A smile spread across his face as he looked down at her, his eyes filled with warmth and affection.
"Then it's settled," Jason said with a grin. "You and Aurum are welcome to stay with us for as long as you like."
Evelina’s pulse was slowly increasing, that I could tell from the gentle vibrations beneath my body. What it meant I pondered over for a while, unsure of what was happening before realising it; my sister was falling in love, with Jason of all people. I turned my head towards her, leaning in and whispering in her ear. “You should ask him out, my blushing maiden would enjoy having a strong and loving boyfriend.” My tone was both suggestive and teasing, but she didn’t seem to mind, blushing quite profusely at my words.
Evelina glanced over at Aurum, her golden eyes widening briefly in surprise before she let out a soft giggle. "You're terrible," she muttered, scratching his head affectionately. But despite her protests, the blush on her cheeks only deepened as they continued walking toward the city gates.
As they entered the bustling metropolis, Evelina and Aurum marveled at the tall buildings, colorful markets, and busy streets filled with people of all races and creeds.
Jason led them through the city, showing them the various landmarks and points of interest. They spent several days exploring, sampling delicious food from different cultures, watching street performers, and even visiting a grand amphitheater where they watched a magnificent play.
As the days turned into weeks, Evelina found herself growing increasingly attached to Jason and the caravan. She couldn't imagine leaving them now; it felt like she had finally found her home.
One evening, as they sat around a crackling campfire outside the city limits, Evelina gathered up her courage and turned to Jason. "Jason," she began tentatively, "I wanted to thank you for everything you've done for us these past few months." He looked at her curiously, unsure where this was going. "And... I wanted to ask you something..." She trailed off, chewing on her lower lip nervously.
Jason leaned in closer, his eyes filled with anticipation and hope. "Yes?"
Evelina hesitated for a moment longer before finally blurting out, "Will you be my boyfriend?" Her cheeks flushed bright red as she waited for Jason's reaction, her heart pounding wildly in her chest.
Jason's eyes widened in surprise, but then a smile slowly spread across his face. He reached up and gently brushed the hair away from Evelina's cheek before cupping her face tenderly in his hands. "Evelina,"
"Evelina," he repeated, his voice filled with warmth and affection. "I was hoping you'd ask me that." He leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers, their kiss gentle at first but growing more passionate as they both gave in to the feelings welling up inside them.
When they finally broke apart, Evelina looked up at Jason with a radiant smile on her face. "Thank you," she breathed, her eyes shining with happiness. "I'm so glad we met." Jason grinned cheekily back at her, running a hand slowly, gently through her silvery hair. “There’s someone I’d like for Aurum to meet, a friend of mine so to speak.” He pulled away from Evelina’s embrace but didn’t turn his back on her as he walked over to his tent and produced an ornate box, about a foot long on all three axis. Inside was yet another serpent, a black one, a female.
"Here she is, Aurum," Jason said, holding the box out in front of him as he walked back to where Evelina and her golden companion were sitting. "This is Lillith. She's a bit... different from you, but I think she'll get along just fine." He opened the box, revealing the black serpent inside, who regarded Aurum with interest.
Aurum blinked slowly at first, then his eyes widened as he took in the sight of Lillith. "She's... beautiful,"
he breathed, a hint of longing in his voice. Jason chuckled and set the box down on the ground between them. "Why don't you get to know each other better? Who knows, maybe you'll become friends." Evelina smiled contentedly, watching as Aurum carefully approached Lillith.
The two snakes eyed each other warily at first, but then slowly started to interact.
Lillith extended her head toward Aurum, sniffing curiously at his golden scales. Aurum, in turn, leaned forward and touched his nose against hers gently. They stayed like that for a moment, their bodies pressed together as if sharing silent conversation. Then, slowly but surely, Lillith began to relax, her body uncoiling slightly.
Aurum noticed this and took it as an invitation. He slithered closer still, wrapping his coils around the black serpent in a friendly embrace.
Lillith glanced over at me, and I was a bit afraid that I might’ve annoyed or offended her, but she pressed her snout against mine affectionately, purring with satisfaction. I barely noticed how Evelina and Jason disappeared into their tent, completely focused on Lillith’s beautiful purple eyes.
The rest of the night passed in a blur of conversation and laughter as the two serpents got to know each other better. As they talked, Aurum found himself telling Lillith about his life with Evelina, their travels together, and even some of the things he'd done back when he was still alone.
Lillith listened intently, her beautiful purple eyes never leaving him as he spoke. And when he finished telling his stories, she coiled around him tighter, nuzzling against him affectionately.
It was a perfect end to an incredible night. As Aurum drifted off to sleep, content and happy for the first time in years, he couldn't help but wonder how his life had changed so much since meeting Evelina and Jason. He dreamed of adventures they would have together, of new places they would see and people they would meet. And in those dreams, there was always a place for Lillith beside him.
