The cage was very uncomfortable and rattling constantly, which made me quite annoyed. The transport moved across vast distances, through fields, forests and over lakes with ferries before coming to a stop. I’m a Scourge, born in the desert and a vicious beast to all who dared enter my sandy hunting grounds. But, apparently the humans in charge of their exotic zoo thought I was a good addition to their desert habitat, and now I had been taken there by train. I am only half-grown, but already over fifty feet long with varying brownish and golden scales running along my serpentine body, as well as a striking pair of deep purple eyes. I hissed in frustration as my cage was lifted by a crane, placed in a giant patch of sand, warm and dry, pleasant enough for me to calm down a little. The surrounding area was a reminder of where I had been before, with vast dunes and a rather large oasis in the middle of my exhibit. I spent a good while just lying there, listening and enjoying the warm sand, but eventually began digging myself a new nest, deep down in a large desert-like dune.
The cage started to rattle once more as the workers began to set up your new home. The sounds of hammers striking metal and wood filled the air, accompanied by the occasional curse. As they worked, a few onlookers gathered around, marveling at your size and scale-covered form. One particularly brave (or foolish) individual even dared to approach you, offering a slimy piece of meat as a treat.
I took a closer look at the approaching human, realising that it was a child with an innocent yet nervous expression. I wasn’t expecting it to be so brave, but I also had no intention of hurting it so I leaned down and allowed the child to feed me the piece of meat. A zookeeper that had stood guard nearby walked up to the family and gently reminded them of how dangerous it was to leave children around alone. But I decided to play the young woman a prank and entertain the visitors a little, so I swept the cap from the zookeeper’s head with the end of my tail and spun it around, taunting her to try and take it back with what could be described as an amused glimmer in my eyes.
The crowd seemed to enjoy the interaction between you and the zookeeper, laughing and clapping as she chased after her cap. The child's parent thanked you profusely for being so kind to their child before leaving with them. As workers continued to assemble your new home, you found yourself wondering if there would be any other interesting visitors or encounters in this strange place...
The day went by with several more people visiting your exhibit, some brave enough to approach you and pet your scaled hide while others simply watched from afar. A few of the other animals in the zoo occasionally came over as well, either out of curiosity or perhaps sensing a kindred spirit in their captivity. As night began to fall, you curled up in your new nest and settled down for the evening, content with the day's events...for now.
As the days turned into weeks, you grew accustomed to your routine of being fed by the keepers and entertaining visitors when they came. You had even made a few friends among the other animals in the zoo, though their company only went so far in filling the void left by your freedom. One particular human female seemed to fascinate you; she was always smiling at you whenever she saw you and would sometimes spend hours just sitting near your exhibit, sketching pictures of you with a strange stick that emitted lines of light. You found yourself wondering what her story was...
One day as the female sat atop a low wall near your enclosure, she dropped her pencil and it rolled underneath some bushes. Not wanting to lose such an interesting plaything, she leaned forward to retrieve it...only to find herself now within reach of your long, scaled tail. You considered for a moment before slowly wrapping the end around one of her legs, gently tugging her closer. The girl yelped in surprise but didn't seem too alarmed; after all, you weren’t hurting her.
With the human now close enough for you to speak with, you carefully coiled your tail around her body, lifting her off the ground and bringing her closer to your face. "Hello," you rumbled softly, a hint of curiosity in your voice. The girl's eyes widened in surprise, but she managed to croak out an answer: "H-hello...your name is Scourge, isn't it?"
“Is that what you humans call me? No wonder everyone seems so tense around my enclosure.” I said with a joking tone to my voice, turning and twisting the girl around gently as I studied her from every angle. “I’m actually named Topaz. Now, what should I call you?”
The girl smiled shyly. "My name is Jessa," she replied. "It's nice to meet you, Topaz." You could sense that she was trying not to be afraid of you, and this only served to pique your curiosity further. "So, uh...how are they treating you here?" she asked hesitantly.
“The keepers are nice, or atleast they try to be.” Many times I had found myself looking down at the humans working around or inside my enclosure, wondering what they were doing. Some of them (usually the younger ones) were often running maintenance, feeding me or just trying to get me ready for visitors. “Why are you asking?” I asked as I let Jessa down onto the ground again, planting my scaled snout on the sand so that we were basically face to face.
Jessa glanced around nervously before meeting your gaze once more. "Well...I've been meaning to talk with someone about what it's like here for you," she admitted. "I want to make sure that you aren't being mistreated, and...and that maybe we can be friends."
You studied Jessa for a moment, her honest expression and sincere words almost melting away the hard shell of distrust you had formed around yourself over the years. "Jessa," you rumbled softly, "it's nice to meet someone who isn't afraid of me...and I would like that. To be friends." You paused for a moment before adding, "But first...how about we play a game?"
