This day was getting weirder and weirder. I am a Shadow Serpent, just a bit longer than a humans forearm and about as thick as a index finger, carrying the deadliest venom in the world within my fingernail-sized fangs. My body is made up of small pitch-black scales, and everything except my glowing green eyes are hard to see even in daylight because of my dark colours. I’m currently in a small glass box, jammed in a wooden crate filled with dampening straw on my way to a zoo for exotic and magical animals.
You're a Shadow Serpent, a dark and mysterious creature that resembles a snake. Your body is covered in small black scales, making it difficult for others to see you clearly except for your glowing green eyes. You have fangs filled with venom, capable of killing even the most powerful creatures within seconds. As you're transported to your new home at the zoo, you can feel a sense of anger and resentment building up inside of you as you're treated like an animal on display.
The crate is roughly jostled around and tossed onto the ground with a thud, nearly shaking your small form loose from its strawy confines. You hear unfamiliar voices speaking in hushed tones nearby as they discuss your arrival and where you should be placed within the zoo grounds.
A group of zookeepers approach your crate, arguing over who gets to take care of you. One of them finally gives in and opens the lid, revealing your small form coiled up inside the straw. "What a cute little thing," he says, reaching in to pick you up. You tense up instinctively, prepared to strike if necessary.
The zookeeper carries you over to an empty enclosure near the back of the zoo grounds. It's a decent sized area with some trees and bushes for you to hide in, as well as a small pond filled with water. He carefully sets you down on the ground before leaving you alone, saying that he'll return later to give you some food.
I turn my head from side to side, taking in my new surroundings with curiosity and annoyance. Soon after realising that I’m alone I slither over a small patch of sand and down below a rock formation, curling my body into a small black ring of scales as I waited for the zookeeper to return. When he eventually did however, I was surprised to see him carrying both food and another snake with him, a male of my species at that. The male was slightly larger than me with yellow eyes, and I could sense his curious gaze as it found me beneath the rocks.
As you cautiously peer out from your hiding spot, you see the zookeeper carefully place the food down on the ground before stepping back. The other Shadow Serpent, the male with yellow eyes, approaches the food slowly and begins to eat, occasionally glancing in your direction as if sizing you up.
You decide that now might be a good time to meet this other Shadow Serpent. Slowly and carefully, you slither out from under the rocks and approach him, keeping your body low and ready to strike if necessary. As you get closer, you can see that he's larger than you by about half a foot and has an air of confidence about him.
The male Shadow Serpent watches you approach with interest, his yellow eyes narrowing as he inspects your form. You can almost feel the weight of his gaze upon you. When you're close enough, he pauses in eating and coils himself into a defensive posture, ready to fight if necessary.
I study his movements and the way he stares at me, feeling somewhat excited to be able to see another member of my species. Instead of approaching him and hissing to try and assert dominance, I lower my head in submission and lie down, wiggling the end of my serpentine tail in a sign of curiosity. “Who are you?” I asked softly, not wanting to make him angry or stressed.
The male Shadow Serpent watches your submissive actions with interest before relaxing slightly. He seems surprised by your lack of aggression and even appears somewhat intrigued. "My name is Zyr," he says finally, his voice a low rumble in the air. "And you are?"
“I’m Ssani.” Zyr looks at me with his intense yellow gaze and I can’t help but squirm a little under the attention. “I didn’t expect the humans to have another serpent.” He hissed in a slightly choppy way, and I guessed he was laughing.
Zyr chuckles softly at your comment. "Neither did I," he admits. "But here we are. So, Ssani... what do you plan to do now that you're here?" He glances over at the food before looking back at you, as if inviting you to share it with him.
“I honestly don’t know, I just want to feel secure.” I slithered around the food bowl and joined Zyr as he continued eating, cautiously sniffing at the small morsels of meat before swallowing a tiny mouse. Zyr didn’t seem to mind, and I cought him staring at me multiple times during the following day, almost as if he was…interested somehow.
Over the next few days, you find yourself spending more time with Zyr, getting to know each other better. He's proven himself to be a strong and capable male, but also surprisingly gentle at times. You can tell that he's never been handled or tamed by humans before, which makes your bond with him all the more special.
One evening, as you're both curled up in your favorite spot near the pond, Zyr turns to face you and nuzzles your neck gently. "Ssani,"
You feel a warmth spread through your body as he nuzzles against you. "Hmm?" you hum in reply, unable to hide the gentle purr that escapes from your throat.
Zyr hesitates for a moment before continuing. "I know we're both here...but I don't want us to just be friends. I want more." He looks into your eyes, his expression serious. "Will you be my mate?"
My eyes open wide in surprise and I freeze on the spot for a few moments, unsure of what to say or do. Mating wasn’t just a thing you did whenever, it was a declaration of love and devotion from both sides. I looked Zyr up and down a few times, trying to decide if I wanted to share this with him. After a while I made up my mind and curled my body around his, gently nipping at his scaled neck. “Yes, I’d love that.”
Zyr's eyes widen in surprise and pleasure as he feels your soft body curl around him. He returns the nip, their scales brushing against each other in a tender gesture of affection. "Thank you," he whispers, his voice hoarse with emotion. "I promise to always protect you and make sure we both have everything we need."
From that day forward, your bond as mates only grows stronger. You share food, shelter, and even warmth during the cold winter months.
