Or, dive into your own fantasy.
Everything had turned upside down in just a single day, and now I didn’t know what to think. I am a Desert Scourge, one of the deadliest creatures in the world with venom potent enough to brew the absolute strongest of potions, or even kill gods. I have the shape of a sand cobra, almost eighty feet long with light-brown and some golden scales, my cobra hood clad in black stripes. My mouth is a thing of horror to most, being almost completely black and discoloured by my inky purple venom. Right at this moment I was being transported in a large metal cage, unbeknownst to me on my way to a huge zoo for exotic animals and magical beasts.
The cage swayed slightly on the back of an old cart, jostling you about as it moved along a bumpy dirt road. Your golden eyes narrowed in annoyance at the movement; such treatment was hardly fit for a creature like yourself. Your long, segmented tail lashed angrily against the bars of your prison, sending up puffs of dust into the air.
The cage jostled to and fro, making you feel unsettled and angry at the same time. You couldn't help but wonder where this cart was taking you, and what fate awaited you there. As if reading your mind, a sinister smile spread across your fanged maw. You knew that whatever it was, you would find a way to turn it to your advantage...
The cage door swung open suddenly, revealing the bright sunlight outside. Your golden eyes narrowed as they adjusted to the sudden change in lighting.
You were led out of the cage and onto a wooden platform, where a variety of other exotic creatures were already gathered. A large, well-dressed man with an arrogant smile stepped forward, holding a microphone in one hand. "Ladies and gentlemen," he boomed, his voice echoing across the crowd, "welcome to the grand opening of our newest addition: the desert exhibit!" The crowd erupted into cheers and applause.
As you were pushed forward onto the platform, your gaze slowly scanned over the crowd, taking in every detail. You could sense their awe and fear at the sight of such a magnificent creature as yourself. You felt an odd mixture of pride and contempt welling up inside you. This would be your new home... for now.
You waited patiently for the man to finish his speech, knowing that eventually he would introduce you to the crowd.
When at last the man turned his attention toward you, a look of admiration crossed his face. "And last but not least," he announced grandly, gesturing dramatically in your direction, "is the star attraction of our desert exhibit: the legendary Desert Scourge!" The crowd erupted into cheers and applause once more as their eyes fixed upon you with a mixture of wonder and fear.
"As some of you may know,"
The man continued, his voice booming over the din, "the venom of the Desert Scourge is said to be more potent than any other creature in existence! Why, just a single drop could kill a full-grown dragon!" He paused for effect before adding with a smile, "And who knows? Perhaps you'll be lucky enough to witness one of our trainers handling the Scourge today!"
The crowd went wild with excitement at the prospect, and you couldn't help but feel a strange sense of satisfaction.
You looked up at the man as he motioned for you to approach him. With a grace that belied your size, you slithered forward, your muscular coils rippling beneath your scaled hide. You came to a halt mere inches from the platform's edge, your golden eyes locked onto his. He looked down at you with a mixture of awe and respect before speaking again.
"The Desert Scourge has always been a creature of legend," he began,
the crowd hushed as they strained to hear his every word, "and now you have the honor of witnessing its majesty up close and personal. But remember: despite its beauty, the Desert Scourge is still a dangerous creature. Do not approach it unless given permission by one of our trainers."
As he finished speaking, he stepped back, giving you the chance to survey your new surroundings once more. The desert exhibit was designed to resemble an oasis, complete with artificial pools and waterfalls.
The sand beneath your feet felt soft and warm as you slithered across the enclosure, savoring the sensation of freedom after being locked up in that metal cage for who knows how long. You could sense the other creatures watching you warily from their own exhibits; they knew well enough not to cross paths with a Desert Scourge unless they were looking for death.
As you made your way toward one of the larger pools, you noticed several people gathered around a wooden platform near its edge. Curious, you slithered closer to investigate.
The platform was built over the pool and held a variety of tools and equipment; hooks for hanging baskets, buckets for scooping water, and even a small workbench with various jars and vials laid out upon it. The people gathered around it were all dressed in the same uniform: white shirts and pants, each bearing the emblem of the zoo. They appeared to be trainers, here to take care of the animals in their exhibits.
One of them, a tall man with a stern face, seemed to notice your approach. He stepped forward and addressed you in a calm but authoritative voice. "Well, well, look who decided to join us," he said, his eyes fixed on yours. "My name is Aaron, and I am the head trainer here at the zoo. We've been expecting you."
You raised your head slightly, your golden eyes narrowing in curiosity. "What do you mean?" you hissed.
