It was another day like many others, humans were doing their thing, hunting, selling, building and maintaining, Elves were enjoying the beauty of nature and the intricacies of magic, Dwarves were mining and digging for riches underground and Dragons were flying overhead, their majestic yet mysterious and frightening appearance respected and appreciated by many. The celestial spirits and deities were watching over from above, unseen by almost everyone except for a chosen few every once in a lifetime, and one of them was me, the Goddess of the Arcane arts, sought after by many for my beauty and powerful spirit that was the source for mortals who could access the ethereal world. I was just in the middle of watching an elven maid who was climbing a tall tree to gaze up at the sky, her eyes wide with curiosity and wonder as she gazed around at the world. I decided to give her a little gift and stepped down, clad in a dress that seemed to be woven from stars and the night sky. “Hello there young one, how is the day treating you?”
As I spoke to her, the elven maid looked down in surprise and delight, blushing deeply as she saw me standing there. Her gaze flickered between my ethereal dress and my radiant beauty before finally settling on my face. "G-Goddess!" she exclaimed, dropping gracefully to her knees before me. Tears of joy and awe welled up in her eyes.
"Please," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper, "might I ask for your blessing?"
“But of course. What is bothering you?” I said with a gentle tone that mirrored my benevolent and friendly nature. The elves had always fascinated me with their intelligence and interest in magic, and since they were biologically immortal (If not killed by something other than age) they were more likely to interact with one of the deities because of their normally extremely long lives.
The elven maid looked up at me with tears glistening in her eyes, "My family... they have fallen on hard times, my father was injured in a hunting accident and cannot work anymore, we have no food, no money..." Her voice trailed off as she fought back sobs. "We may be forced to leave our home soon if things do not improve."
Her words struck a chord deep within me, reminding me of the fragility of mortal lives even in this seemingly perfect world.
“Bring me to him, and I will try to help.” Even if we divine beings couldn’t tend to all mortal problems, there were still cases like these that managed to stir up our spirits. The elven maid climbed down from the tree and led me to her house; a spacious settlement carved out inside of a living root of a tree so large it was almost comical.
As they arrived at the house, the elf's father sat outside, leaning against a stump, his leg wrapped in crude bandages and his face etched with pain. He looked up as they approached, a glimmer of hope sparking in his eyes before fading into despair once more when he saw who it was that had brought them.
"It's no use, child," he croaked. "Even the gods cannot undo fate."
“Fate is something of an unknown mystery, but all are not bound by it.” I assured him before sticking my hands out, showing the blue glow enveloping them. “Just let me take a look, and I will make sure you can atleast walk normally again.”
The elf's father looked skeptical, but his daughter urged him to let me heal him. Tentatively, he extended his injured leg toward me. As my glowing hands hovered above his wound, I closed my eyes and concentrated on the magical energy flowing through me. The air around us seemed to shimmer with power as I channeled it into his body, knitting together the torn flesh and mending the broken bones.
After several minutes of concentration, I opened my eyes and removed my hands.
The elf's father gasped as the pain vanished, and he looked down in astonishment at his now-healed leg. "T-thank you," he stammered, tears of relief streaming down his face. "Thank you so much! You don't know what this means to us!"
The elven maid hugged me tightly, her tears flowing freely as she expressed her gratitude over and over again.
“Whoa, calm down there.” I chuckled in amusement and surprise, not used to being hugged by anyone else than my own divine children. I spent a few more minutes talking with the elven family before returning to my invisible watchpoint in the sky. A few weeks passed without any particular action happening in the world, and I was sitting at home when Jason, a younger god of mischief and trickery knocked on my door. He had been interested in me for over a hundred years at this point, and despite his frequent and quite annoying visits I found him…amusing. “Jason, you already know my answer. No, I won’t marry you, or anyone else on that matter.”
"Oh come now," he said with a grin, "you can't keep me away forever! Besides, there are other gods who would love to court you." He paused dramatically. "Especially if they knew what I know..." His voice trailed off suggestively.
My eyes narrowed as I considered his words. There was something in the way he said it... "What do you mean?" I demanded, growing suspicious.
"Well," Jason drawled, affecting an air of innocence that didn't quite suit him, "let's just say there's someone out there who might be able to give you a run for your money." He raised an eyebrow meaningfully. "Or at least provide you with a challenge you won't soon forget..."
My curiosity piqued despite myself, I found myself asking, "Who could possibly manage that?"
A knowing smirk spread across Jason's face.
"Oh, just a certain dragon lord who's been causing quite a stir lately," he said casually. "They say he's the most powerful dragon to ever walk the earth... and that he has his eye on you."
My heart skipped a beat at his words. A dragon... the most powerful one of them all? And interested in me? The idea was both exhilarating and terrifying, but I couldn't deny the thrill that ran through me at the thought.
“Bring me there, I would like to see him for myself.” I said with an urgent and very serious voice, my mind racing with possibilities and different scenarios that might happen in the future.
Jason grinned broadly. "As you wish," he replied, bowing deeply before disappearing in a puff of mischievous green smoke. A moment later, I found myself standing at the entrance to the dragon lord's lair, deep within the heart of an active volcano. The heat was almost unbearable, but it only served to heighten my senses as I took in my surroundings.
The lair itself was a marvel of draconic engineering: massive obsidian columns supported the cavern ceiling, while lava rivers flowed through intricate channels etched into the black stone floor. Atop a throne fashioned from solidified magma sat the dragon lord himself: a colossal creature with scales of burnished gold and eyes that seemed to hold centuries of wisdom and power. He turned his head slowly, regarding me with an unreadable expression as I approached.
“So, I heard that you were supposedly my equal in form of magical power. You sure look pretty powerful, I’ll give you that.” I remarked with a smile, feeling my body start to feel warm from the sensation of meeting someone who could actually match me in form of power.
The dragon lord chuckled, deep and resonant. "Flattery will get you nowhere, divine one," he rumbled. "But it does not change the fact that I find your presence... intriguing." His gaze drifted over my ethereal form before returning to meet my eyes.
"What would you have of me, Aelwen?" he asked, his voice smooth as silk. "Why do you seek me out in the depths of my lair?"
I took a step closer to him, feeling an unnatural attraction pulling me toward him despite my best efforts to resist. "Partly because I'm curious... and partly because I want to see how we match up against each other." My words were soft but filled with determination.
The dragon lord studied me for a moment longer before finally inclining his head in agreement. "Very well," he said, his voice low and throbbing with power. "Let us see how we fare against each other." Without warning, he launched himself into the air, wings beating powerfully as he circled around the cavern.
I raised my hands, feeling the magical energy flow through me as I prepared for battle. The dragon lord dove toward me, claws extended, and I met him in mid-air with a burst of argent light.
Our battle shook the land with ripples of reality-bending portals, winds strong enough to blow forest into the air and earthquakes powerful enough to make the bedrock crack. We fought for weeks, trying our best to overcome the other but we were all too equal. I was nimble, quiet and quick while he was unbelievably strong, stubborn and steadfast as a mountain. When we both eventually reached our limits in a final clash, we collapsed beside each other, bruised and exhausted but also strangely content and…happy? “Wow, I haven’t been this…drained, in forever. You’re an amazing opponent.”
The dragon lord chuckled softly, smoke wafting from his nostrils as he stretched out his wings, flexing them lazily. "I must say the same of you," he replied, his voice raspy with fatigue. "To fight someone so evenly matched... it's been a long time indeed."
For a few more moments we lay there, catching our breath and recovering from the exertion of our epic battle. Then, almost as if by mutual agreement, we both stood up and stepped away from each other, no longer feeling the need to prove ourselves against one another. The dragon lord gestured toward a nearby hot spring with his snout.
"Why don't you join me for a soak?" he offered genially. "I'm sure it would do us both good."
The question hit me a bit off guard, but it sure seemed alluring to clean up and just relax for a change. Plus, hot springs were very nice and warm, which I felt like was a good way to get my mind off things. “That sounds good. Lead the way, worthy adversary.”
The dragon lord dipped his head in acknowledgement before turning away from me and walking toward the hot spring. As I followed him through the cavern, I couldn't help but marvel at the sight of him: so powerful, yet so graceful despite his massive size. There was something about being around him that made me feel...alive.
Eventually we reached the edge of the steaming pool, and the dragon lord lowered himself into its warm embrace with a satisfied sigh.
After the warm water enveloped my aching body and filled me with a feeling of relief and satisfaction, I looked over at the mass of scales in the volcanic pool beside me. “So, I meant to ask, is there any way for you to, say, take human form?”
The dragon lord raised an eyebrow. "Human form?" he repeated, sounding surprised. "I... don't believe I have ever tried." He considered this for a moment before letting out another puff of smoke. "Very well," he said at last. "If that is what you truly desire, I shall grant it."
With a wave of his claws, the dragon lord began to shift and change, scales melting away to reveal smooth, glistening skin beneath.
His spine seemed to lengthen as his body grew more human-like, until finally he stood before me: a tall, broad-shouldered man with golden hair and eyes that still held the wisdom of ages. "Well," he said, looking down at himself, "that wasn't so hard."
I laughed softly, studying him in his new form. "No, I suppose not." The air between us seemed to shift, as if charged with an electricity neither of us could quite define.
“You look…quite good I must say.” His body was magnificent with faintly tanned skin and rippling muscles that I couldn’t help but admire. There was something…untamed about him, something primal and powerful that drew my attention like a moth to a flame, and when he caught me staring I couldn’t keep from blushing heavily. “You’re, ahem…naked.”
The dragon lord chuckled. "Ah, yes," he said, seeming amused. "Forgotten that detail, hadn't I?" With a wave of his hand, he was suddenly clad in a set of simple but well-made clothes: tight leather pants and a form-fitting shirt that showed off his physique to perfection.
"There," he said with a satisfied nod, "much better."
(Jesus, why is he so perfect?) I thought for myself, trying my absolute hardest not to seem rude or inappropriate by staring at his body. “So, What do we do now that we’re both finished with our little duel?”
"Well," the dragon lord said after a moment's consideration, "I suppose we could... explore our newfound connection. See where it leads us." He smiled then, and I felt my heart skip a beat in response.
"Are you suggesting...?" I trailed off, unable to finish the thought.
His smile widened, and he took a step closer to me. "I'm suggesting that we find out together," he murmured, his voice low and husky. And then, before I could even think about protesting or agreeing, his lips were on mine: hot, demanding, and so very full of promise.
My senses reeled as our tongues danced together, my body responding to his touch with an intensity that took me by surprise.
We sat in the hot spring for a few moments, our bodies pressed together in a tight and steady embrace that spoke volumes about our newfound relationship. “So,” I managed to say as we finally parted our lips to catch our breath. “Have I managed to persuade this great and powerful beast into becoming something…more?”
The dragon lord chuckled softly, his warm breath tickling my ear. "More than you know," he said cryptically before leaning in once more, claiming my lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sent shivers down my spine. As the world faded away and all that mattered was this perfect moment between us, I knew with absolute certainty that our story was only just beginning.
Years passed in a haze of passion and adventure as Aelwen and the dragon lord (now known simply as Drakal, meaning "Dragon King" or "Lord of Dragons," by those who knew his true nature) explored their newfound connection. They traveled far and wide across the world, learning about each other's people and customs while leaving a trail of hearts they had touched behind them.
