Endless road. Westbound into the sun. The golden sand blends into an orange horizon with a black line cutting through to meet the waning light.
You need to stretch.
You pull over at a lonely diner. A bell jingles as you enter. Vinyl booths and chrome trim. This place is stuck out of time.
"Hey there, stranger. I sure am glad to see you."
The evening redness seeps through the windows, painting her in an earthy glow. You tilt your head, waiting for the rest of her prepared speech.
"But then I guess if I seen the devil himself pulling in here I might get excited, if only to take a break from watching air move."
She glides to your booth with a practiced walk like a ballerina.
Slow day?
"You're the first soul I've seen."
No fooling?
"Scout's honor."
She fills a mug with black coffee and sets it before you.
"Coffee."
It sounds more like an instruction than an offer.
"Chasing the sun down today? You don't look the Vegas type. Where you headed?"
I go where the road goes.
If she intends to take your order today, she hasn't mentioned it. You read her name tag.
Sunny.
"Here I am."
A smiley face pinned to her apron. You look up and see the same expression. After a moment, she put her hands on her hips as if she's in awe. The welling of tears at the corner of her eyes. She seems like she's been stuck here an eternity.
"So where you from?"
